Frequently asked questions.

How do I get started?

Please reach out by clicking the “Let’s Get Started” button and fill out the contact form. You may also email or call directly. We will get back to you within 2 business days to set-up a free 15 minute phone consultation to talk through any concerns, the process of therapy, and what kind of therapy would be best suited for your child’s needs. After the consultation, we will schedule a 60 minute intake appointment with you and/or you and your child.

What to expect from therapy?

When your child or adolescent begins therapy, we prioritize creating a safe, welcoming space where they feel comfortable. Sessions are designed to be engaging and age-appropriate, encouraging your child to explore their thoughts and feelings at their own pace.

How long and often are therapy sessions?

Individual therapy sessions are typically 45 minutes. Most clients meet with their individual therapist once a week. Additionally, we work closely with parents/caregivers to provide support, share insights, and collaborate on strategies that could be implemented at home. Most parent sessions occur monthly but can vary depending on their family’s needs.

Do you take insurance?

Friedlander Counseling is a fee for service practice and clients are responsible for paying the full fee for each of their therapy sessions upon completion. While Friedlander Counseling is an out-of-network provider, we will generate an invoice called a “super bill” at the end of each month. Superbills contain all of the necessary coding and data needed for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Clients can also access these superbills through our secure, online client portal.

What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 24- hour cancellation policy. If you are sick and it is appropriate to transition to a video platform, we can always meet virtually. We do have a “no sick person” policy where we kindly ask people not to come to the office if they currently have active symptoms as well as if they have tested positive for COVID and do not have symptoms. Please be advised that cancellations made up to 24 hours before a scheduled appointment will be processed without penalty. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before a scheduled appointment will be subject to the charge of the appointment rate.

How do you handle confidentiality with caregivers?

It is extremely important to hold respect for a child or teen’s privacy while still involving the parents or caregivers. This looks different depending on the age of the child and their individual needs (e.g. parents/caregivers of younger children may participate more in sessions than parents of a teenager). As children get older, they seek more independence and privacy. This process is developmentally appropriate and can even deepen the therapeutic relationship and process. It is imperative to be open and honest about what will be kept confidential versus when parents/caregivers might need to be involved, especially with adolescents. Overall, it is a delicate balance between respecting a minor’s confidentiality while, simultaneously, including parental support.
